My husband and I really hate onions. But we really love tacos! Fortunately it only takes 5 minutes to make your own taco seasoning, and you can customize it to be just the way you want it.
From what I understand, if you follow a low FODMAP diet (which restricts certain types of carbohydrates) you will have to forgo onion and garlic. That just might take tacos off the menu - unless you make your own taco seasoning. There are several good reasons to keep homemade taco seasoning on hand - read on to learn all about it!
Why You'll Love This
- It's allergy friendly - gluten free, and dairy free
- Easy to make
- Money saver! A single serve packet of taco seasoning ( .75 oz.) can cost around $2.00. And a recipe of 5 Minute Taco Seasoning, which makes 6 times that amount, costs less than $4.00
- It can be customized to fit the low FODMAP diet, if you leave out the garlic powder.
- It's an important ingredient in 2 of our family's favorite diner recipes - cheese enchiladas, and One Pot Chili Mac.

How to Keep the Cost Low
- Don't buy the spices in jars in the baking aisle of the grocery store, where you will pay the highest price.
- Look for the spices in cellophane bags in the section of the store where you can find tortillas, enchilada sauce, taco sauce, canned chiles, etc.
- The bulk section of the grocery store, where you can buy spices by the pound, is another excellent way to save money.
Here's How To Make It
This recipe is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Or really just 1 & 2!
Step 1. add all ingredients to a bowl.

Taco Seasoning FAQs
This recipe is not low FODMAP, since it contains garlic. I would try making this without garlic if you're looking for low FODMAP tacos, and see how you like it.
Some people with IBS follow the FODMAP diet. If you make this taco seasoning without the garlic powder and leave out dairy products on your tacos, you may find that you can still eat tacos.
The most considerate way to handle it is to cook the onions separately and have them available for people to add in to their food if they like.
An inconsiderate way to handle it would be to say "It's chopped up so small you won't even notice." Believe me, we WILL notice.
No. If Taco Bell can make their tacos without onions, so can we! So make a batch of 5 Minute Taco Seasoning and enjoy your life 🙂
Actually onions are often considered one of the most loved vegetables, although there is no good reason why. When a food tastes the way body odor smells, the smart thing to do is to avoid it.
Homemade taco seasoning can be stored for 2-3 months if kept in a sealed container and stored in a cool, dry place like a pantry. It can still be used for up to 6 months, but the spices might lose their potency after being stored for that long.

How to Use Taco Seasoning to Make Tacos
You'll need to refer to this often, so I put this in a yellow box to make it easy to find 👀
- Brown 1 pound meat, such as ground beef, turkey, or chicken.
- Drain fat, add 3 Tablespoons of the taco seasoning mix plus ¾ cup water.
- Simmer and stir for a few minutes until the meat is evenly coated and the water has mostly evaporated and a juicy sauce forms.
- Add to tortillas, taco shells, tacos salad, burrito bowls, nachos - whatever your heart desires 🙂
Variations
If you're having a hard time locating cayenne pepper, or you just don't enjoy that flavor, try subbing an equal part of one of these:
- smoked paprika
- powdered chipotle pepper
If you are allergic to corn, you can replace the cornstarch with an equal amount of tapioca starch or potato starch.
Storage
Taco seasoning can be kept in a freezer bag or a hard container with a tight fitting lid.
Store in a cool, dry place like a pantry - there's no need to refrigerate.
